Food Solutions Update

Since finishing up our surveying, our food leaders have been learning about innovative food organizations! They have had guest speakers from Nokomis East Neighborhood, from the Minneapolis Healthy Living Initiative, have visited Hampden Park Coop, are planning a trip to Appetite for Change, and are learning about why the Wirth Coop closed. Do you have some ideas about innovative solutions that we should look into? Please let us know!

If you are passionate about food justice and would like to join the team, then let us know!

If you would like to share your thoughts and ideas about food access in Elliot Park, then contact us! You can also attend our Food Access Summit happening in September.

Special thanks to Headwaters Foundation for Justice for making this work possible.

Skate Park and Lighting Detail Nearly Finalized

Skate park and lighting designs are finished! Although it is quite ambitious, MPRB and City of Skate hope to break ground this year after the XGames. There will still be some minor refinements around landscaping, sidewalks, and seating. Check out our blog post for more details and more photos!

The improved skate park will be one of the best free skate parks in the twin cities metro area. We expect to see the park bustling as skaters come from all over the Twin Cities.

The athletic field lighting will allow for games to be played even after our early sundowns in autumn.

Special thanks to MBRB, City of Skate, Marlys Anderson, and other community members who helped to make this happen.

Personal Safety, Awareness, and Self Defense Class

The Personal Safety, Awareness, and Self Defense class was great! Thank you to The DMNA for partnering with us to offer this free class. Thank you Renee Allen with precinct one for teaching us valuable safety and awareness knowledge. Thank you to Krav Maga Minneapolis for teaching accessible self defense we could tell that participants were having fun and learning.

Send us a message if you are interested in attending this type of class and we could potentially host another in the future!

New Community Gardens Program

MPRB has launched a new community garden program and has created a pilot project at Franklin Steele Park. Volunteers are growing vegetables that will be given out to people in the park and local food-shelves. Community members are welcome to apply to get some garden space and can also join as a volunteer. E-mail [email protected] or call 612-313-7779 for more info. Also, remember that with new 2018 garden policies, you can apply to put up your own garden at a grassy section of your local park.

For our unidentified May photo, Brett Morrow identified it first but wanted to pass along the gift card to the second guesser, which was Jennifer Graff! The May photo featured the community garden run by Bethlehem Church and adjacent apartment building at 1137 7th St.
