Food Solutions Update

Since finishing up our surveying, our food leaders have been learning about innovative food organizations! They have had guest speakers from Nokomis East Neighborhood, from the Minneapolis Healthy Living Initiative, have visited Hampden Park Coop, are planning a trip to Appetite for Change, and are learning about why the Wirth Coop closed. Do you have some ideas about innovative solutions that we should look into? Please let us know!

If you are passionate about food justice and would like to join the team, then let us know!

If you would like to share your thoughts and ideas about food access in Elliot Park, then contact us! You can also attend our Food Access Summit happening in September.

Special thanks to Headwaters Foundation for Justice for making this work possible.

Save the Date: September 21st

Come join us at the Elliot Park Arts Quarter Art Pop! Block Party for a great time and to support our local Arts Quarter: 10th St. between Park Ave and Chicago Ave (Gamut Gallery, Kristi Abbott Art, Punchy Magnolia, Fades Of Gray Inc., Bee Ink Tattoo, Rose Salon MPLS, Band Box Diner). There will be live music and food trucks. The Arts Quarter businesses will have doors open and special exhibits!

EPNI's Food Solutions team invites all residents, employees, and property owners to join us. We will be presenting some concepts and potential solutions regarding food access issues in Elliot Park. What would you like to see? A healthy grab-and-go restaurant? A community owned and run grocery store? An innovative cafe-farm hybrid? Join us and to share ideas, feedback, and excitement over this powerful, community-led action!

EPNI Welcomes Summer Intern

Joey Nguyen is a senior at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, on the verge of completing his degree in Communication Studies. Combined with five years as a grocery team member at Target Eden Prairie and having lived in Victoria, Bloomington, Maple Grove, and Minneapolis, Joey aims to continue developing and expanding his diverse experiences and relationships with others. Outside of work, he has a strong interest in reading, gaming, cars, and movies. After he graduates, he hopes to begin a career in public relations with the goal of owning his own public relations firm in the future.

Skate Park and Lighting Detail Nearly Finalized

Skate park and lighting designs are finished! Although it is quite ambitious, MPRB and City of Skate hope to break ground this year after the XGames. There will still be some minor refinements around landscaping, sidewalks, and seating. Check out our blog post for more details and more photos!

The improved skate park will be one of the best free skate parks in the twin cities metro area. We expect to see the park bustling as skaters come from all over the Twin Cities.

The athletic field lighting will allow for games to be played even after our early sundowns in autumn.

Special thanks to MBRB, City of Skate, Marlys Anderson, and other community members who helped to make this happen.

Personal Safety, Awareness, and Self Defense Class

The Personal Safety, Awareness, and Self Defense class was great! Thank you to The DMNA for partnering with us to offer this free class. Thank you Renee Allen with precinct one for teaching us valuable safety and awareness knowledge. Thank you to Krav Maga Minneapolis for teaching accessible self defense we could tell that participants were having fun and learning.

Send us a message if you are interested in attending this type of class and we could potentially host another in the future!

What do you want Elliot Park to look like in 10 years?

We are extending the duration of our Community Vision Survey. Please join us determining what our neighborhood should look like in the future! Share your thoughts and ideas and communicate with other neighbors on our interactive map!

Franklin Steele Park Events

There will be pop up events once a week at Franklin Steele Park for the rest of the summer! As pop-up events, the times and dates are a surprise!

MPRB will also host a "Rock the Block" party with free BBQ and games hosted July 18 from 3-6PM.

EPNI will partner with Madison Tenants Association in August to throw a back-to-school party. Stay tuned for details.

New Community Gardens Program

MPRB has launched a new community garden program and has created a pilot project at Franklin Steele Park. Volunteers are growing vegetables that will be given out to people in the park and local food-shelves. Community members are welcome to apply to get some garden space and can also join as a volunteer. E-mail [email protected] or call 612-313-7779 for more info. Also, remember that with new 2018 garden policies, you can apply to put up your own garden at a grassy section of your local park.

East Town Business Partnership

East Town Business Partnership is opening member registration for 2019-2020. Please visit their website to learn more.

Congratulations to Mobey Moberg for Correctly identifying our June photo! It featured The Park Elder Center and the adjoined 1515 Park Ave apartment building.

For our unidentified May photo, Brett Morrow identified it first but wanted to pass along the gift card to the second guesser, which was Jennifer Graff! The May photo featured the community garden run by Bethlehem Church and adjacent apartment building at 1137 7th St.
