Great news! The skate park expansion project at Elliot Park is moving forward. The Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board, in partnership with City of Skate, wants to hear from the community on the skate park design and upgrades to nearby picnic facilities. Visit the MPRB project website to learn more and share your thoughts via the online survey.
EPNI began working with a driven resident, Marlys, in April 2018 to pursue the installation of athletic field lighting. Although the chance of successes seemed very low initially, we kept chasing leads and bits of information. Autumn that year, MPRB responded to our inquiries, corrected a paperwork error that they discovered, and began working with EPNI to invest Park Dedication Funds' into our neighborhood. EPNI and residents moved quickly to gather hundreds of surveys and, based on the survey results and a timely opportunity with City of Skate, EPNI recommended that Park Dedication Funds be invested in 1) skate park improvements 2) athletic field lighting 3) athletic field seating.
An MPRB Project Manager has now been assigned to the park improvements and is working with City of Skate to move ahead. Athletic field lighting is being pushed forward at the same time. Athletic field seating is on hold based on future plans to expand the park so that it takes over adjacent Elliot Ave.
Huge credit and thanks go to Marlys, who drove forward park improvements and didn't give up even when chances of success seemed very low. She dedicated countless hours to this project and to other neighborhood issues as well.
Thank also to City of Skate, for pushing forward skate park improvements, for their dedication to quality over lowest-price-tag, and for their inclusion of community feedback in the process.
