Conversation of 700 10th Avenue S from Office to Affordable Housing

Barbara Jeanetta, Alliance Housing

Alliance Housing is planning to renovate the property at 700 10th Avenue S into affordable housing.  It is currently being used and will soon be vacated by HCMC for administrative offices.  The building is owned by a medical lab who will remain an owner and maintain their office and lab in the building.  It will house 55 adults and small households with very low incomes and who have experienced homelessness.

Alliance Housing was born out of the vision of St. Stephens’ Catholic Church volunteers and emergency shelter staff and residents who wanted to create tangible, long term housing solutions for homeless families and individuals.  The nonprofit (not religious affiliated) organization was incorporated in 1991 and took advantage of vacant and available properties at low cost in South Minneapolis.  Alliance continues to honor its history by developing housing solutions for homeless, poor and other individuals shut out of market opportunities.

Since this is a renovation project, Alliance Housing does not anticipate the need for a land use application or any variances.

Motion to consider: Support for the proposed renovation of 700 10th Street by Alliance to create housing for 55 adults and small households with very low incomes and who have experienced homelessness.
