Proposed Changes to 510 S 8th Street Building & House of Charity/St. Stephen's Merger

Michael Huffman, Director of Shelter & Outreach, St Stephen's Human Services

House of Charity/St Stephens is proposing transitioning their building at 510 S 8th Street from permanent housing to temporary shelter housing.  With the current board and lodge license, they are eligible with the emergency order to provide shelter at this location, and it meets the distance requirement from the other shelter at First Covenant.  With this change, it is projected that there will be an addition of 16 beds. However, the length of stay is expected to be similar to their current average stay of six months.

As part of this transition, a dining hall will be added to the 510 building, with food catered from the food center.  This would eliminate the need for residents at 510 to walk to the food center three times a day for food.

Motion to consider: Support for House of Charity/St Stephens application to transition the housing at 510 S 8th Street to temporary shelter and housing
