EPNI Updates

Early Giving Starts November 1st

Early Giving kicks off this Friday, November 1, marking the official start of Give to the Max 2024. Our work at EPNI involves helping connect and strengthen the community. This is by holding events such as clean up days and safety forums or working with residents to help build community. Donations of any amount help support EPNI to keep doing this good work, and now until November 21st is an excellent time to give and help us continue to do our work in strengthening our Elliot Park neighborhood, as well as grow our capacity.

Here is the link to our donation page. Your donations will help make Elliot Park a better place to live!

October EPNI Event Reports Round-Up

Elliot Park Partners & Residents Clean up Trash at 2024 Fall Clean Up Day

On Thursday October 24th, EPNI and some of our partners spend two hours cleaning up various parts of our Neighborhood. The first 30 minutes were spent eating donuts and drinking coffee, while Elliot Park leaders Wako and Jessica briefed the volunteers on where to go in the neighborhood, what to pick up, and where to put the trash. The rest of the time volunteers walked through the neighborhood and picked up trash. The final result was about 20 bags of garbage being picked up and a safer, cleaner neighborhood.

Special thanks to Sherman Williams and Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge who volunteered to help keep our streets clean! Also thank you to co-host Becca Thomas and the Elliot Park & Rec Center.

Neighbors Exchange Updates and Ideas with Law Enforcement at the Fall 2024 Elliot Park Public Safety Forum

On Wednesday, October 23rd, we held our fall safety forum with several law enforcement officers representing Minneapolis Police Department, Minneapolis Metro Transit Police Department, and Minneapolis Parks Police Department. It was a good opportunity for community members to be updated on what law enforcement has been doing lately and ask questions to panelists as well.

Thank you to the panel of law enforcement officers for participating in the event. Further thanks to the tabling organizations engaging with residents on safety-related topics, including MPRB Senior Planners sharing updates on the next phases of Elliot Park and Franklin Steel Park improvements, and Public Works, engaging on the Re-Thinking I-94 project. Finally, thank you to the Elliot Park Staff for co-hosting this event at the Elliot Park Recreational Center.

Elliot Park Community Aid FundThree Ways to Give to our Neighbors Recovering from the 8/13/24 Apartment Fire at 1501 S. 11th Ave.

October Updates: On October 10th, we held a Community Aid Fund and donation distribution day at the Elliot Park Rec Center. During this event we were able to distribute Aid funds using the relief money that we received from the Minneapolis Foundation and raised in the community, and gave out additional clothing and household donations to displaced families. We are currently completing a winter coat and outerwear drive for the next distribution to the families. We are accepting donations of new or gently used winter coats and gear at Elliot Park & Rec Center (M-F, after 3pm) -- thank you!
September Updates: On September 5th, we held a Drop-in Resource Day for the residents and families displaced by the fire at the Elliot Park Rec Center. We gave out donations and connected families to valuable resources. These donations and services were made available thanks to our service partners: Hennepin County Resource Navigators, Mid-Minnesota Legal Services, MPRB - Elliot Park, First Covenant Church, Aeon and Trellis Housing. We have also received a $48,000 Minneapolis Foundation grant to boost our direct aid distribution to people affected by the fire, awarded to directly benefit the affected residents, in recognition of our collaborative response efforts.
Background: On August 13th, a devastating fire swept through the multi-family apartment building on 1501 11th Ave S. in our beloved Elliot Park neighborhood, claiming two lives, hospitalizing four more, and displacing 22 households. EPNI has been working with the Red Cross and several community partners to help the affected residents rebuild their lives. There are THREE WAYS YOU CAN HELP:

1) DONATE DIRECTLY TO THE ELLIOT PARK COMMUNITY AID FUND: Click HERE to donate through EPNI’s GiveMN. Donations will go directly to families to help offset security deposits & first month's rent and any direct expenses faced by the families and households -- ANY AMOUNT HELPS!

2) DONATE NEW OR GENTLY USED WINTER COATS & OUTERWEAR, CLOTHING, PERSONAL/HYGIENE AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS: Fire victims lost everything and need to replace everything. Click HERE for a list of what's needed, how and where to donate.

3) DONATE NEW HOUSEHOLD ITEMS THRU A TARGET REGISTRY set up for Elliot Park fire victims:
https://www.target.com/gift-registry/gift/elliot-park-community-aid -- It's easy to do! Pick something out, and it will automatically be delivered to Elliot Park Rec Center at checkout.

City & Community Updates

Welcome, New Elliot Park Director Becca Thomas!

As a proud resident of the Elliot Park neighborhood for over ten years I am excited to step into this new position as Park Director at Elliot Park Recreation Center! I have worked part time at Elliot since 2019 but began as a volunteer in 2017 as a student at North Central. Throughout my career I have worked as a mental health practitioner, program manager, community organizer, and outreach worker with a variety or organizations serving those most in need. I am passionate about community and am excited to continue partnering with neighbors in this role.

2024 Transportation Summit

The completion of a transportation infrastructure project can mean easier access, enhanced transportation options, and an opportunity for more business. The construction period, however, can be another story.

Join Move Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Regional Chamber for the 2024 Transportation Summit to explore the issues businesses experience when facing construction around transportation infrastructure projects near their locations, and to contribute to a cross-sector conversation on how to support local businesses. We hope to provide some ways to navigate through the planning and building process so that the ribbon-cutting ceremony is a joyous celebration.
The 2024 Transportation Summit is free to attend and includes breakfast with vegan and gluten-free options available.

Studio 900 is accessible via numerous transit lines including 4, 5, 6, 9, 22, 61, C Line, D Line, and those running on Nicollet Mall 2 blocks away. The Hennepin/Warehouse District Light Rail station is 4.5 blocks from the venue. Hennepin Avenue features sidewalk level bike lanes, public bike parking is available outside the venue.

Hennepin County Effectively Ends Veteran Homelessness

Hennepin County and our partners are housing and helping veterans overcome homelessness at a higher rate than veterans are coming into the homelessness system.
As a result, the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH), Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) have certified that we effectively ended homelessness among veterans in Minnesota’s largest county.
“Hennepin County is one of the most populous counties in the country to achieve an effective end to veteran homelessness,” said USICH Executive Director Jeff Olivet. “Hennepin County’s efforts are a case study in successful homelessness policy, and we encourage other communities to follow in their footsteps as we work together to ensure every veteran has a home.”

Nicollet Mall and downtown transit changes

The City is exploring changes to transit routes downtown. This work is part of re-envisioning the future of Nicollet Mall.

The City is moving transit routes off Nicollet Mall. We developed three options for transit changes in partnership with Metro Transit. The goal of this work is to make transit as good or better than transit on Nicollet Mall today.

We'll engage the community on: Design and safety solutions, Sidewalk width, Bikeway design (if applicable), Turn lanes, Transit speed and reliability improvements, Impacts on transit riders, Traffic impacts, Curbside use impacts, Property access and driveways

You can share your input on changes to Nicollet Mall and downtown transit.
