8/5 Elliot Park Neighborhood Night Out

On Tuesday, August 5th, over 500 neighbors gathered at Elliot Park to celebrate our neighborhood at our annual Elliot Park Neighborhood Night Out. Neighbors enjoyed a beautiful night out together, with DJ tunes, grilled burgers and dogs, sambusas, watermelon and JonnyPops! Kids and families came out to play yard games, dunk their favorite park staff in the dunk tank, create a community art project, get free backpacks for school. Neighbors hung out and visited, and connected with a wide array of community representatives and resource tablers. It was a fantastic celebration of our shared Elliot Park community!

Thank you to our partners and co-sponsors: MPRB - Elliot Park, Aeon, Bethlehem Baptist, Catholic Charities, TapMinneapolis, Hennepin Healthcare, JonnyPops, NCU, and all the many resident volunteers who helped EPNI make this happen! We look forward to seeing you at next year's NNO!

Nearly 800 Elliot Park Neighbors Served So Far at Wednesday morning Food & Fresh Produce Distributions -- Come Join Us!

Since July 13th, the EPNI Food Access Work Group and its partners have served nearly 800 of our neighbors, through our Wednesday morning Food Distributions, hosted by our partner, MPRB - Elliot Park. Through Jericho Road's partnership with Second Harvest Heartland, neighbors can choose from a wide variety of groceries for their fridge and their cupboards, as well as a lovely array of neighborhood-grown fresh produce, grown and donated by our partners at the Gethsemane Community Garden. And now in September, Mobile Loaves has joined the effort as our newest project partner, offering take away sack lunches and a variety of "head to toe" hygiene products every other week.

All involved have really been enjoying the new connections made and relationships we are building with many new neighbors, through this project. This has been an impactful project for our Elliot Park neighbors, and we have a lot of fun doing it. If you'd like to join our Wednesday morning "dance & donut parties" at Elliot Park as a volunteer, sign up HERE! All are also welcome to join the EPNI Food Access Work Group to continue work on this and other projects to improve food access in Elliot Park, at 4th Monday of the month meetings, 6:30-7:30pm at Elliot Park & Rec (1000 E. 14th Street).

Youth Voting – Shaping the Future Starts with Your Vote

Introduction

While 2025 might not be a presidential election year, there are still many important local elections in Minneapolis -- mayor, city council, parks and recreation board, and board of estimate and taxation. In these local elections, a handful of votes can determine the election outcome-- making your vote extra important. However, elections have been changing. It’s also critically important to be aware of changing influences on voting decisions. In this article, high school students Avital Krebs and Gezelle Gonzalez Maldonado unpack how elections are impacted by social media, why young people should vote, how to vote, and basic information about the voting process in the United States.

Why Social Media is a Game Changer

Starting in the 1930s, candidates commonly used radio, film, television, and newspapers to publicize themselves and their policies. Until recently, there was never a direct, targeted way to connect with voters on a larger scale. The introduction of social media has been a game-changer for candidates to reach and impact their voters. As Americans have flocked to social media, candidates have followed. This was most notable beginning with Barack Obama’s second presidential run in 2012, which marked a turn in digital campaign strategy and helped him succeed at winning the election.

Social media platforms provide access to individual voters by allowing candidates to share their platforms with millions of users. With the 2022 launch of ChatGPT, artificial intelligence (AI) was brought into the mainstream, and quickly implemented into social media. AI multiplied the ability, through algorithms, to tailor content based on users’ already-established viewing habits, which can reinforce existing political beliefs. This is often referred to as “being in a bubble” and means that voters see what already aligns with their viewpoints, limiting exposure to other candidates and standpoints.

Updates & Neighborhood Opportunities:

Community Solar Garden Opportunity

Cooperative Energy Futures (CEF) is a local energy cooperative housed in South Minneapolis at the Sabathani Community Center.

They are collaborating with various neighborhood organizations and community-based organizations to spread the word about their Community Solar Garden (CSG) Program that saves you money on your Xcel bill, while building community-member owned
renewable energy infrastructure. We give priority to community members with lower incomes or that participate in programs like SNAP, WIC, energy assistance and Medicaid.

Our community-member owned CSG program allows community members, whether you rent or own, to share the benefits of the solar array we are building on the parking canopy at Abbott Northwestern Hospital at 28th and Chicago.
